Clothing Sale held on August 16, 2021

In the US, one in four women experience severe partner physical violence and leave in fear and post traumatic stress.   The statistics in Los Angeles county area is similar to that of the national stats and pose a serious problem especially to females without supplementary financial resources or family help.  The damage to the victims’ self esteem and mental health can only be estimated to be detrimental.  The members of LHMBD became aware of various women’s shelters in the Los Angeles area and researched additional information about the residents, who, as it turns out, were victim of domestic abuse, facing financial hardship and needed help to get a new start. As we were aware that there already were governmental organizations designed to help with the legal side of things, LHMBD decided contribute differently by brightening their day with a clothing drive.

The City of Los Angeles is a well known entertainment mecca.   Yet, it’s a little known fact that Los Angeles is also one of the largest apparel design and manufacturing centers. Thinking that there must have been a large amount of unsold clothing from the county-wide social lock down measures undertaken earlier in the year, we decided to solicit for unsold clothing with advisement of Hanmi Family Counseling Center which reviewed our project idea and provided certain tax reporting information for the businesses who may use the donation for its own tax purposes. 

Much to our surprise, we received racks and racks of women’s apparel to be sold for direct monetary donation.  In addition, we decided that many of the items may be appreciated by the residents of the women’s shelter for their own use and decided to inventory a part of the donation at my garage.

The clothing sale was conducted at a parking lot of an apparel business that generously allowed us to use it our purposes in the early morning hours on a Saturday.  Prior, we advertised the clothing sale and the brands donated on social media and received positive responses.  Every team member attended the sale and the first ever clothing sale concluded with much success.
